Parent Notice
Effective: October 30, 2026
1. Why you're seeing this
You're setting up Compose with Me for a child under 13. The U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) requires us to tell you what we collect from your child and to get your consent first. The account is yours: you sign up with your own email address, and your child practices on it. We never ask your child for an email address.
We collected your name and email address only to create your account and record your consent. Your consent is completed when you start a paid subscription; the payment confirms that an adult agreed. For that reason, accounts set up for a child are not eligible for the free trial that adult and teen accounts get. If you don't subscribe within 30 days, we delete the account, your name, and your email address.
2. What we collect while your child uses the app
- Songs and compositions your child writes or imports, and their settings (instrument, tempo, theme).
- Practice activity: which songs were practiced, for how long, whether a piece was finished, streaks, and mastery progress.
- A display name, only if your child joins a teacher's studio or an ensemble group. We recommend a first name or nickname, never a full name.
- Error reports: if the app breaks, a technical report (the error, the page, and the device or browser type). It contains no name, email address, or IP address.
- Feedback, only if someone sends it from Settings: the message and its topic. It reaches our support inbox by email, and we reply only to your email address. If it contains your child's personal information, we delete it once we have answered.
The microphone is used only for the live tuner and practice feedback. Sound is processed on the device and is never recorded, stored, or sent to us.
We do not collect your child's email address, phone number, photo, location, contacts, or advertising ID. There is no chat, messaging, public profile, advertising, behavioral tracking, or artificial-intelligence feature.
3. How we use it
Only to run the app for your child: saving and syncing their music, tracking practice, and showing progress to a teacher you allow (see below). We never sell your child's information, use it for advertising, or use it to build a profile about them.
4. Who can see it
- A teacher, only if your child joins that teacher's studio or redeems their assignment code. The teacher sees the display name, practice streak, practice time, recently practiced song titles, and assignment completion, never your email or account details. Leaving the studio stops the sharing.
- Ensemble group members, only for groups your child joins with an invite code. They see the display name and the songs shared in the group.
- Our service providers, who handle data only to run the app for us and may not use it for anything else: Supabase (account sign-in and data storage), Render (hosting), Cloudflare (website delivery and security), and Sentry (error reports), plus Resend and Proton (email) for any feedback sent from the account. Payments go through Stripe's Link or Google Play, which handle your payment details, never your child's.
We disclose information to anyone else only if the law requires it. Joining studios and groups is optional: you can let your child use the app without ever sharing with a teacher or group, and Settings > Parental controls lets you block them with a PIN.
5. Your rights as a parent
At any time, you can:
- Review the information we hold about your child, or download a copy of it in Settings > Your data > Download My Data.
- Correct anything that is wrong.
- Have it deleted, all of it or just some.
- Withdraw your consent and stop any further collection, which closes the account.
- Turn off studios in Settings > Parental controls, behind a PIN only you know. This stops your child joining or creating studios, posting songs to them, and redeeming assignment codes. A studio they've already joined keeps sharing until you leave it. We store a scrambled form of the PIN, never the PIN itself.
Delete everything yourself in Settings > Danger Zone > Delete Account & Data or at composewithme.com/delete-account.html. For anything else, email support@composewithme.com from the account's email address. We reply within 10 business days.
6. How long we keep it
- Your child's songs, settings, and practice activity: as long as the account exists. Deleting the account erases them from our database immediately.
- Database backups: they roll off on their normal schedule and are never restored to bring deleted data back.
- Error reports: deleted automatically by Sentry within 90 days.
- Feedback: kept in our support inbox for up to 12 months after the conversation ends, and any personal information about your child is deleted once we have answered.
- Accounts set up for a child that never start a subscription: deleted after 30 days.
See the data retention section of our Privacy Policy for the full policy.
